With 136 m dispersion, smallest of the cruisers, 12 barrels, and the second highest HE chance of the cruisers you can snipe as effectively as Moskva *Henry and Moskva both have 3 less barrels and worse dispersion so despite higher caliber and better arcs, they both fall short in actual usefulness. Zao is faster then every other cruiser but the Henry Zao is second only to the Moskva in shell velocity (technically Hindy is 5 m/s faster but functionally there is no difference) Zao has the best mid range AP* except for Hindenburg Zao has better shell arcs then every other cruiser but Moskva Zao is stealthier then every other cruiser but Minotaur Zao has better torpedoes then every cruiser but the Minotaur What makes Zao so effective in spite of the power creep is the following: Henry is faster and has a higher fire chance. Hindenburg has better AP at the mid range Moskva has better shell arcs and velocity Minotaur is stealthier and has more useful torpedoes
Zao's tend to get overlooked because every other cruiser is better then that in some way: The Zao is second best because it is second at just about every metric that matters to a cruiser. What would be the best cruiser? Hell if I know.
So, to defend the title of this thread of Zao as the second best cruiser in the game. But it doesn't stop how much I like this vessel. Honestly not sure why because in game I feel I do well but when I check em.just 'eh'. So firstly a bit of a disclaimer, my stats are pretty poor in it. There hasn't been a serious discussion of the Zao's characteristics in a while. Secondly as a discussion of the place of this craft in the current meta. I'm writing this for two purposes, one as a preview to people grinding to Zao of what to expect and what makes this ship worth it.
